Building the Turning Torso took 4.5 years. Work began with the first dig on February 14, 2001. By March 2002, the foundation was ready, and the concrete was poured.
The base of the building was completed by August 2002. After that, construction progressed by adding one floor after another, all watched by the people of Malmö. The building was well-lit, and work was intense to finish on time.
In November 2005, people began moving into the building. Careful planning made sure the move-ins went smoothly, avoiding delays and crowding in the elevators.
How much did Turning Torso cost to build?
The original budget for Turning Torso was 550 million Swedish crowns (about 55 million Euros). However, the final cost is reported to be as much as 1.5 billion Swedish crowns. Initially intended as a building for owner-occupied apartments, it turned into rental apartments due to high costs.
The company that owns the building, HSB, has faced criticism for the expensive construction. Despite this, the building has brought significant attention to Malmö, marking it as a pioneering project with international recognition.
